Best Restaurants in Knoxville: The 2026 Local's Guide

Knoxville's food scene has exploded over the past few years. What used to be a "BBQ and biscuits" town (not that there's anything wrong with that) has transformed into a genuinely exciting dining destination with James Beard-nominated chefs, diverse international cuisines, and a craft cocktail scene that punches way above its weight. Here are my favorite spots — the places I actually take my family and friends.
Market Square & Downtown
Downtown Knoxville's Market Square is the beating heart of the city's dining scene. The pedestrian-friendly plaza is lined with restaurants, and the surrounding blocks have even more options.
The Tomato Head
Market Square · Casual · Vegetarian-friendly
A Knoxville institution. Incredible sandwiches, salads, and pizza in a colorful, artsy space. The "Big Veggie" sandwich is legendary. Perfect for lunch.
Lonesome Dove Western Bistro
Market Square · Upscale casual
Chef Tim Love's Knoxville outpost. Wild game, creative cocktails, and a buzzing atmosphere. Great for a special night out. Try the quail.
Osteria Stella
Old City · Italian · Date night
Authentic Italian in a gorgeous, intimate space. Handmade pasta, seasonal dishes, and an excellent wine list. Reservations recommended.
West Knoxville & Farragut
The western suburbs have their own thriving food scene, anchored by Turkey Creek and the Kingston Pike corridor. These are my go-to spots when I'm in that part of town:
Brickhouse Bar & Grill
Farragut · Casual · Family-friendly
Great burgers, solid bar food, and a surprisingly good beer selection. The kind of place where the whole family feels welcome. Consistently good.
Fried Tomato Buffet
Knoxville West · Southern comfort
Classic Southern buffet done right. Fried chicken, country ham, and a salad bar that's actually worth visiting. This is comfort food the way your grandmother made it.
Lonesome Dove (West)
Turkey Creek · Upscale casual
The West Knoxville location offers the same quality as the downtown original, with a slightly more relaxed vibe. Great for clients and family dinners.
Coffee & Breakfast
Knoxville has become a genuine coffee town. Here are the spots I hit regularly:
- Remedy Coffee — Downtown. Excellent pour-over and espresso. Minimalist space, serious about coffee.
- Balanced Breakfast — Multiple locations. Great breakfast sandwiches and a solid cup of coffee.
- Honeybee Coffee Co. — Bearden. Laid-back vibe, quality roasts, and good pastries.
- Old City Java — Old City. Knoxville's original specialty coffee spot. Still one of the best.
The Bottom Line
Knoxville's dining scene is one of the best-kept secrets in the Southeast. Whether you're a foodie, a casual diner, or a family looking for a reliable pizza spot, this city delivers. And it's only getting better — new restaurants are opening constantly, and the talent pool of chefs choosing to make Knoxville home continues to grow.
If you're considering a move to Knoxville, the food scene alone is worth the relocation. And once you get here, I'll make sure you know all the best spots.
